Get Involved

SSIHC's mission depends on your participation. There are many social problems that appear too overwhelming...homelessness is not one of these. You can help to end homelessness by getting involved in SSIHC.

Become a Mentor

Volunteer mentors form the cornerstone of SSIHC's support services for our residents. Working in tandem with our professional case manager, our mentors are one reason why the majority of our residents succeed in our program and maintain long-term stability.

"The mentoring program really helps build on our community here because it brings together people from different walks of life, people who might not ordinarily encounter each other...and everybody grows as a result.
--Sara Cartmill, Former Executive Director

As a Mentor you will:

  • Join a team of 4-6 committed volunteers who work closely with a professional case manager.
  • Work with one family throughout the duration of their stay in our housing (2 years).
  • Interview prospective residents
  • Assist new residents with their move into our housing
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to residents with tasks such as transportation, household budgeting, tutoring, and grocery shopping
  • Help connect residents to their new community's many resources designed to move them toward economic stability (libraries, after-school programs, employment and training programs)

SSIHC provides the training. You will need to provide:

  • about 4 hours per month
  • a willingness to work as a team
  • a commitment to listen, learn, and share
  • a desire to meet new people and be a patient, reliable friend

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact SSIHC at 301-562-0520 or ssihc@verizon.net for more information.

"It's all pretty easy, and it's incredibly rewarding. It's an incredible learning experience and it's incredibly enriching." --Suzanne Mintz, mentor

Volunteer on a Project

If you have a few hours or a few days, you can volunteer with SSIHC to help maintain our properties, organize donations for our families, tutor residents, or help raise awareness about the need for affordable housing in our region. SSIHC works with youth groups, faith-based groups, individual volunteers, and students working to fulfill their community service requirements.

Please contact us at 301-562-0520 or ssihc@verizon.net to get involved!

Case Study

Dozens of students from throughout Silver Spring and Takoma Park contributed over 100 hours to help SSIHC complete renovations to Shepherd's House (our newest house, shared by six single men) in the Fall of 2002. Here's what they had to say about their experience:

"It felt good to help get a house ready for people who don't have any place to live. I think I made a difference today."

"I learned that cleaning windows is really hard to do, and how hard my mom works."

"I liked throwing stuff in the dumpster, and being with my friends doing something good."
